Corruption Left Russian Soldiers with Worn-Out, Outdated Weapons

Published

on

Systemic corruption throughout the Russian government resulted in Russian soldiers being sent to invade Ukraine with old, worn-out, broken-down, and outdated weapons and attendant support and maintenance equipment; never mind the ill-thought-out supply-chain planning to prosecute the invasion of Europe’s second largest nation of more than forty-four million people.

We earlier reported that the day before Putin ordered the invasion that the Russian Ministry of Defense dumped scores of videos – which are no longer accessible – of military “exercises” then being conducted in Western Russia and Southern Belarus along their borders with Ukraine – the same military forces that within hours would invade Ukraine – that showed soldiers fielded with old, worn, and antiquated weapons and command and control systems.

A video made available by Ukraine’s defense ministry shows a dozen or so captured Russian soldiers complaining that not only were they lied to about what they were being sent to do, but that they were given old and worn out Soviet-era weapons.

Russia’s claim to being the second most powerful, equipped, and modernized military in the world, it seems, had more to do with the number of boots it had on the ground than it did with the weapons it was able to field. Weapons, it is now evident, are old, worn-out, or fitted with old technology, as these videos show.

For example, Russia has the largest number of tanks in the world, but they’re old, rusting, cannibalized hulks; too many of which, it seems, are left over from the days of the Soviet Union more than 30-years ago, which has meant that many of them have been plagued with serious mechanical problems on the battlefield without a fix, never mind maintenance and fuel.

Indeed. Western intelligence has disclosed that mothballed Russian military equipment is being removed from long-term storage depots for parts, or to completely replace destroyed equipment and vehicles. But what is being discovered in larger numbers than anyone could have expected, is that a lot of this equipment had long ago been stolen or is missing the parts that some of them were going to be cannibalized for, thus preventing the replenishment of vehicles, and replacing losses.

No, Russia’s military certainly did not goosestep into Ukraine with the brand-new bright and shiny weapons that Putin and the Kremlin had assured the Russian people – and the West, and China, for that matter – were being manufacturing all these years during which Putin has been in power. So, where did all those hundreds of billions for Russia’s military go? It’s estimated that Russia has been spending $65 billion a year, compared to the more than $600 billion the US spends. Corruption is hindering Russia’s attempts to replace its losses in Ukraine even with old vehicles and equipment. Imagine that.

It was just days ago that US and NATO intelligence officials openly warned that Russian soldiers’ deployment with so many older weapons – from long guns to armor – in addition to rapidly dwindling supplies, including for maintenance and repair – has, and is, playing a not insignificant role in impeding the Kremlin’s progress in Ukraine, especially as Ukraine’s military has been able to halt Russian advances in many places.

Putin’s military – at least not those in the Kremlin in charge of it – was not prepared for a delay of the magnitude it faces. They expected a blitzkrieg with time to establish a supply line and for follow-on forces to arrive. But instead, Russian troops were met by a prepared Ukrainian, Western-backed military and citizenry that has been able, in many key areas, to separate the initial invading forces from not only themselves, but from any supply lines and reinforcements that the Kremlin has hurriedly tried to cobble together.

A senior Pentagon official said there are indications that Russia is frenetically working to resupply its troops – many stranded and cut-off from one another – and brainstorming how to move in adequate reinforcements. But as we have seen during the ensuing week, there hasn’t been significant progress on either front. Meanwhile, Russia has used a sizable number of its precision-guided munitions, especially its air-launched cruise missiles, and is in a quandary over how to replenish them.

Moreover, intelligence officials said Russia’s precision-guided and other missiles have had a failure rate as high as 60 percent, which would certainly seem to be evidenced by the magnitude of photographs and video of unexploded ordnance strewn across the Ukraine landscape that has emerged since the war began.

EU corruption scandal: European Parliament president reacts | DW News

Authorities searched offices of the European Parliament on Monday as part of an investigation into alleged corruption, Belgian prosecutors said.

A European Parliament vice president, Eva Kaili, and other lawmakers have been implicated in the scandal.

Kaili was arrested Friday after police allegedly found “bags of cash” in her home.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola on Monday described the scandal as an “attack” on EU democracy.

“The enemies of democracy, for whom the very existence of this parliament is a threat, will stop at nothing,” Metsola told EU lawmakers in Strasbourg, France.

She blamed “malign actors linked to autocratic third countries,” saying they had “allegedly weaponised NGOs, unions, individuals, assistants and members of the European Parliament in an effort to subvert our processes.”

In two days of intense fighting in Bakhmut, the enemy lost about a hundred convicts pushed there in Wagner Group uniforms. Earlier this summer, we crushed their combat units. But Wagner is still training new recruits and is well funded. Their personnel is being honed for a specific task. Each unit performs its mission in a small area. They don’t even collect their dead.
