Corruption, the major factor responsible for abandoned projects in Nigeria – Femi Ebofin

Published

on

In more than two decades, over fifty thousand government projects have been left uncompleted across the six geo-political zones of the country by both federal and state authorities. According to the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, as at August 2021, the estimated cost of this large quantum of uncompleted projects was 12 trillion naira. For example, the Federal Government has lost 88billion naira revenue to the abandoned old federal secretariat in Ikoyi, Lagos in 27 years. The latest abandoned project in focus is the Millennium Tower and National Cultural Centre in Abuja which was started in 2005, but remains uncompleted at 40 per cent with the Federal Government now calling on interested investors in the private sector to invest 400 million US dollars in a public-private partnership so that the project can be completed. What can be done to ensure project completion of the abandoned projects? Are some of the projects still viable? PAUL ALAJE, Economic Analyst and FEMI EBOFIN, Structural Engineer were on the program to analyse and proffer solutions.

EU corruption scandal: European Parliament president reacts | DW News

Authorities searched offices of the European Parliament on Monday as part of an investigation into alleged corruption, Belgian prosecutors said.

A European Parliament vice president, Eva Kaili, and other lawmakers have been implicated in the scandal.

Kaili was arrested Friday after police allegedly found “bags of cash” in her home.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola on Monday described the scandal as an “attack” on EU democracy.

“The enemies of democracy, for whom the very existence of this parliament is a threat, will stop at nothing,” Metsola told EU lawmakers in Strasbourg, France.

She blamed “malign actors linked to autocratic third countries,” saying they had “allegedly weaponised NGOs, unions, individuals, assistants and members of the European Parliament in an effort to subvert our processes.”

In two days of intense fighting in Bakhmut, the enemy lost about a hundred convicts pushed there in Wagner Group uniforms. Earlier this summer, we crushed their combat units. But Wagner is still training new recruits and is well funded. Their personnel is being honed for a specific task. Each unit performs its mission in a small area. They don’t even collect their dead.
