USA: MEXICO'S ANTI DRUG EFFORT PLAGUED BY CORRUPTION ALLEGATION

The U-S State Department has said that both the American and Mexican government recognise that Mexico’s anti-drug effort is plagued by corruption.

But it also said that Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo has made “major progress” in curbing traffickers.

The comment by spokesman Nicholas Burns was prompted by allegations from a former Mexican federal agent of widespread corruption in the country’s top crime fighting organization.

U-S State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns commented Tuesday on Mexico’s anti-drug efforts.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
I can tell you that both the United States and the Mexican governments recognise that corruption is a serious problem, an endemic problem in Mexico itself. We believe that President Zedillo has been making major progress in the fight against narcotics as well as the fight against corruption in general.

Burns’ comments were prompted by accusations from Ricardo Cordero Ontiveros.

A former Mexican federal agent who quit his job in frustration, Cordero accused his government a week ago of lying when they said they were fighting drugs.

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
The charges I make against the procurator are that he is deceiving the nation saying that he is fighting drug-trafficking, which is a lie to the Mexican nation and also to the Americans.

Burns said he thought the recent extraditions of Mexicans to the U-S was a very good signal of good will by the Mexican government.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
The Mexican government has recently extradited 11 individuals to the U-S, including four drug traffickers. The Mexicans have also deported two other individuals who were wanted in the U-S included one Garcia Obrego, who was in the F-B-I’s ten most wanted list. These actions, these extraditions, are unprecedented. The Mexican government had not been willing of course, until just the last year or so to extradite their nationals to stand trial in the U-S. It’s a dramatic departure from historic Mexican policy.
SUPER CAPTION: Nicholas Burns, U-S State Department spokesman

Cordero told reporters that Mexico’s main anti-narcotics agency was so corrupt that its agents were escorting massive shipments to the U-S border, serving as bodyguards for drug traffickers and misusing U-S anti-drug funds.
